The most prolific source of interactive grammar games for kids online is Internet 4 Classrooms.com. This site has interactive games, quizzes, and activities for kids from Pre-K to 8th grade. For example, the Pre-K resources have 30 games for alphabet recognition and 18 games for language arts that cover colors, rhymes, and patterns. 8th grade has 14 levels of activities for grammar and 10 for reading, covering such topics as analogies, proofreading, sentence structure, story elements, and figurative language. The next site for some good interactive grammar games for kids is Edu Place. The game is called Grammar Blast and is suited for kids from 2nd to 5th grade. It practices nouns, verbs, adverbs, adjectives, prepositions, and pronouns, as well as making complete sentences and punctuation. One good quality of this site is the number of review activities, which is critical in learning.
Grammar Gorillas is found at Fun Brain.com. The beginner’s level covers nouns and verbs and the advanced level covers all the parts of speech. When you start to play, you will notice that the parts of speech are listed on the page with definitions and examples given. Parts of speech covered are: noun, verb, adjective, adverb, interjection, preposition, conjunction, and pronoun. One good thing about this game is it explains why an answer is wrong. This is an entertaining as well as educational game.
The next game on the list of interactive grammar games for kids is Grammar Practice Park, which is geared for grades 3-5. Grade 3 has practice on nouns, pronouns, sentences, and tense. They not only offer practice on punctuation and subject-verb agreement, but add work on prefixes, suffixes, and homophones. They are really good games and explain the grammar rules before you play. In addition to punctuation and making complete sentences, the next website has games that cover synonyms, antonyms, prefixes, and suffixes. They are found at Ellwood.Goleta.k12.ca and are suited for grades 2-6. In one game, called Ball Hog, the player scoops up the tennis ball which has the proper synonym or antonym. The game Word Jungle has the player searching for synonyms in a jungle. There is an Egyptian pyramid in Race to Ramses, where the player adds prefixes and suffixes to words. Wall of Words has the player building a wall by making properly punctuated, complete sentences. The graphics are well done and the games are fun to play.
