Punctuation Grammar Games

There are many online punctuation grammar games to help people sharpen their skills. Following are several sites that have good games.

Punctuation Grammar Games

Grammar Blast at Edu Place has games for grades 2-5 and each level has a unit that covers punctuation. If you miss an answer, you get one more try before the game gives you the correct answer. You get ten points if you answer correctly, and five if it takes you two tries to get the correct answer.

The next of the punctuation grammar games is an editing games called Edit Dan’s Copy at Scholastic.com. It has two levels; one for capital letters and ending punctuation and another for quotation marks, apostrophes, and run-on sentences.  After you pick your level, you can either click on the letter on the keyboard that is in the game or your own keyboard. If you get the wrong answer, they display the right one.

ELlwood.Goleta.K12.Ca has several good games that cover grammar skills. There is a game called Wall of Words where you build a wall by making complete sentences using the correct punctuation. First you have to decide if you want to make sentences with five or seven words. It is fairly easy and the graphics are entertaining and colorful.

Comma Chameleon is one of the punctuation grammar games on line that has vivid graphics. It is found at Sheppard Software.com. You click on the punctuation mark that the sentence needs, then click on the place where it fits. It corrects you by not allowing the click to work, so you have to try again. When you place the punctuation marks in the right places, it reminds you of the grammar rules.

Other Grammar Games

Punctuation is only a part of making a sentence a complete thought. Each sentence needs a subject and a verb. Following are some games to help learn and practice making a sentence that makes sense.

There is a good game for middle school or high school students called Grammar Arcade. It is located at Class Zone.com. The game on subject-verb agreement, middle school level one, has you in a pyramid. If you are caught by a mummy, you have to answer a question. You also have to answer a question before moving to the next level. There is also a game on missing or misplaced commas, sentences fragments, and run-on sentences. These are similar in style to the subject-verb agreement game.

Grammar Practice Park is a great online game that is found at Harcourt School. It is geared towards 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades. All these grade levels have practice on sentences. The 4th grade level has more practice on singular and plural nouns and the 5th grade level covers subject-verb agreement and punctuation.

Grammar Games for the Classroom

This punctuation game has sound effects for each different punctuation mark.  You have the children practice reading sentences out loud. They could be in small groups or practice as a big group. You could make up your own sounds for each mark. Here are some suggestions:

Period: smack your lips or tap the desk twice.

Comma: say “hmmm” or tap the desk once.

Question mark: say “huh?”

Exclamation mark: say “whoa”

Another version of this would be to walk around the room and assign certain body movements for each punctuation mark, like:

Period: Stop walking

Comma: Pause

Question mark: Shrug your shoulders

Exclamation mark: Put your hands up into the air

This is not a game but a really fun activity. It was developed for practicing quotation marks, but could be adapted for commas and apostrophes. Have the students find quotes or provide a list for them to choose from. Each student gets four pieces of elbow macaroni. They each write the quote on a sentence strip and glue the elbow macaroni where the quotation marks should be. Colored sentence strips would make is even more fun. If you really want to be colorful, put a little rubbing alcohol (like a tablespoon) in a baggie with a few drops of food coloring, add some elbow macaroni, and then dry on paper towels. It should dry overnight and may take up to 24 hours to dry depending on the temperature and humidity of the room.
