Alfred Butts invented Scrabble in 1938. It was called Criss-Crosswords and was based on another game he invented previously called Lexiko. Mr. Butts could not sell his game to any major board game manufacturer but managed to sell some games on his own. In 1948, James Brunot contacted Mr. Butts and offered to buy the rights to the game. Brunot promised Butts a portion of the profits from the sale of the games. He made some minor changes to the game and changed the name to “Scrabble” which means “to scratch frantically.” Brunot was very lucky when the president of Macy’s played the game, liked it, and ordered some for the store. Eventually, Hasbro became the owner of the game.
Scrabble was a television show in the 1980s and 1990s. Scrabble is still very popular today and can be found on many gaming systems. You can also play it online. There are been over 150 million games sold around the world, with one out of every three households in the United States owning one.
The rules to Scrabble are not complicated. There is a game board that is 15 by 15. Two to four players can play, and they basically make a crossword puzzle. Each word has to connect with a previous word on the board. There are special bonus squares that can either double or triple the points of the letter placed on them or the whole words. There are 100 tiles, 98 letter tiles and 2 blanks. The number of letter tiles for each letter depends on the frequency of that letter. Each player draws seven at the beginning of the game and draws additional tiles to make a total of seven for every play. Each letter tile has a point value, with the letters that occur less frequently in the English language getting the most points. Here are the point values of each letter and the number of tiles for each letter:
