The game Scrabble was originally called Criss-Crosswords and was created by Alfred Butts in 1938. He only made and sold a few copies, and was not able to interest any of the game manufacturers at that time. Finally, he sold the rights to the game to James Brunot in 1948, and Brunot made a few changes to the board and the name. He picked the word “Scrabble” because it means “to scratch frantically.” He got his big break when the president of Macy’s played the game and put in a huge order for them. After changing hands several times, the game is now owned by Hasbro.
