The Game of Scrabble

Scrabble was invented by Alfred Butts in 1938 and was based on another game he invented called Lexiko. Scrabble was originally called Criss-Crosswords and unfortunately, Mr. Butts was not able to interest a major game manufacturer in it.  James Brunot had purchased the game and, in 1948, bought the rights to it from Butts, promising a portion of the royalties. Brunot’s break came when the president of Macy’s played the game and ordered a large number of them. Brunot sold the rights to Selchow & Righter who later sold the rights to Coleco. When Coleco went bankrupt, Hasbro became the owner of Scrabble.

Scrabble was a TV show, can be found on many gaming systems, and is available online. The game is sold in 121 countries and there are 29 language versions.  Over 150 million games have been sold in the world, with one out of three American households owning one.

The game board is a 15 x 15 grid. It is played with 2-4 players, who pick seven random tiles and basically make a crossword puzzle. Each word has to connect to another one. There are blanks on the grid for double and triple letter points and double and triple word points. The center starting square is a double word square.  There are 100 tiles, and each letter has a point value.

The point value was determined by the frequency of the word, with the less frequent words getting more points.  Here are those values:
