Of all the wacky word games out there, the funniest are the games where you choose random words to be inserted in a story. When the story is read, the words do not make sense and it is usually hilarious. Of course, other games can be wacky as well.
Education Place has Wacky Web Tales that are suitable for kids in grade three and above. There are new tales added monthly. It is great for teaching and reviewing parts of speech, like common noun, proper noun, verb, adjective, adverb, and exclamations. First, you pick from a list of 100 categories for your story. Then you type in words according to which part of speech they are without knowing the story. There is even a “Parts of Speech” button to explain and help you. When finished, click “See Your Wacky Web Tale” and there is your story and the words you added to it are in bold letters.
Another in the list of wacky word games is Wacky Word Search at Addicting Games. It is a game that had 15 words and gives you 5 minutes to solve it. It is fairly difficult with words like marketing and bureau and its size is 18 by 18, so it would not be for young children. It is the timer that makes it challenging and wacky.
Here is a great game for teachers to use that is the most creative of the wacky word games. Writing Fix has The Wacky Word Game. Instead of filling in words in a prewritten story, it gives you some words to start your own story. This adds a level of creativity and yet the story has a wacky start. You are given three words or phrases to start your story with and you have the option of changing one or more of them. So, you can click until you come up with a really funny combination. For example, here are some of the story starters:
Word Games is a site with 10 different games. Some of them are new every day and some have the option of being a multiplayer game. These include: Popword, where you have to make words before the grid is filled up by falling letters and Cryptoquote, which has a quotation written in code.
Two others are Codeword, where you use your powers of deduction and Definetime, which is a timed game testing your knowledge of word definitions.
There is also a daily word search game and a fun multiplayer game called Switchword, which is like Scrabble but you can place letters on top of other letters.
The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences has Kid’s Pages contains brainteasers and riddles. The Rebus Puzzle Brainteasers, also called word picture puzzles, are really fun and challenging. These make your mind work in a different way, using both sides of your brain. A REBUS is words or letters arranged in a certain way to represent a word or phrase. For example: HEADHEELS It stands for “head over heels”. Another one is: ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTVWXYZ This stands for “missing you”. Awww, it is clever and sweet.
One more, just for fun, is: JOBINJOB This means “in between jobs.” Another online game to play is Wacky Word Wiz. This game has a grid with letters that fall. To stop the grid from filling up, you click on adjoining letters to make words. There are various blocks with special helps for you. It also interrupts the game occasionally with trivia questions that are interesting and educational and you get points added or taken away depending on your answer. This game is both challenging and fun.
