There has been a lot of media buzz lately that emphasizes the point that word games for adults, including brain teasers, word searches, and crossword puzzles, are a critical way for adults to maintain mental health as they age. Word games can be fun for young adults, and they are fun for older people to play as well.  They are designed to meet the needs of players at different levels and are both fun and challenging for those who play.

This variet is one of the main benefit of word games for adults: There is never a lack of kinds of games, so a person who gets bored with one kind of game can move on to another one. Word games are often characterized as nerdy and boring, but once you start playing it is hard to stop.  Many people are surprised to find out how addicting these games actually are!  People in the business of brainteasers are inventing new types and styles of word games each day that challenge new skill sets or combine popular styles together. 

Types of Word Games

One style of word games challenges the player to rearrange letters to form words.  Anagrams are games that mixed up letters are presented to the player, and then the player must rearrange the letters to form a new word as suggested by a clue.  Boggle is a game in which a player is challenged to form as many words as possible from a limited amount of letters that come up at random. 

Another kind of word games challenges the player to build words given letters.  The most popular of these kinds of games is known as Scrabble: Using a playing board, players take terms arranging letters in intersecting lines on the board to make words for points. 

Word searches and crossword puzzles are yet another kind of word game that focuses on finding words. Word searches are simple, yet can challenging if they are specifically designed to be tricky: Letters of words are hidden in a square or rectangle of random letters, and a player has to circle the hidden words within a square. Crossword puzzles give clues to filling in blanks that have a specific number of letters. Since the words intersect with one another it is tricky to find the right words that have the exact number of letters and have the given letters in them, especially if they are designed to trick you.
