Scrabble: The Game

Scrabble is played with two to four players, who each draw seven letters at a time, or the number of letters to make a total of seven. They make a crossword puzzle, and every player must connect to at least one word on the board.

The board is a grid with 15 squares on each side. Some of the squares are bonus squares and allow the letter to be doubled or tripled, or the whole word to be doubled or tripled. The starting square is a double word square.

Each game comes with 100 tiles, including two blanks that have no point value, and 98 that have letters on them with their respective points written on them.  The more a letter is used in the English language, the lower its points, and the more tiles that bear that letter. The number of letters and point values is as follows:

The number of letters in a Scrabble game is: A-9, B-2, C-2, D-4, E-12, F-2, G-3, H-2, I-9, J-1, K-1, L-4, M-2, N-6, O-8, P-2, Q-1, R-6, S-4, T-6, U-4, V-2, W-2, X-1, Y-2, Z-1.

The point values are:

  • 1 - A, E, I, O, U, L, N, R, S, T
  • 2 - D, G
  • 3 - B, C, M, P
  • 4 - F, H, V, W, Y
  • 5 - K
  • 8 - J, X
  • 10 - Q, Z

Scrabble was originally called Criss-crossword and was invented by Alfred Mosher Butts in 1938. He could not sell it to a game manufacturer, but sold the rights to James Brunot in 1948 for a share of the profits. It eventually was bought by Hasbro, and has sold over 150 million games world-wide. It was a show on TV for a while and there are several PC and video game versions. It can also be played online.
