Finding Antonyms for Words

Many people think that finding antonyms is a challenge. Actually finding antonyms can be done easily, it all depends on where you look. Your sources need to be reliable and verifiable; for, if they are not, the result of your search might not prove beneficial.

Defining an Antonym

Basically an antonym is simply a word that means the complete opposite of another. A few examples include “up” and “down” and “fast” and “slow.” Understanding the meaning of an antonym is the easy part, it is finding the antonym that can be the hard part.

There are an array of places where you can find antonyms. One of the best places that you can possibly look is right here on YourDictionary. When you look up the work on YourDictionary, you can click on the thesaurus tab. Look for the word or words provided in the thesaurus and then look for the antonym listed for that word or words.

Online Thesaurus

You can also find antonyms on other websites such as on an online thesaurus. If you do a search for an online thesaurus, you will find that there are a plethora of thesauruses. Each online thesaurus has an antonym finder feature. You can easily type in the word in which you need an antonym for and in mere moments the antonym will pop up.

Word Processing Software

If you do not have Internet access, you can open up your word processing software (Microsoft Word, Microsoft Works, WordPerfect, or OpenOffice). Once you are in your spreadsheet software, you can type you word in the body of a blank, new document and then go to the review tab or menu where you will find the spell check feature. Spell check may also have a feature that allows you to look up the antonym.

Hard Copy Thesaurus

Another tried and true blue method for finding antonyms is to look them up in a hard copy thesaurus. Most hard copy thesauruses will have an option for looking up an antonym. While they are not the most convenient because of their size and the massive amount of space that they can take up either on table or in one’s bag, a thesaurus is essential.

Bookstore

Another source that you can tap in on is a bookstore. Believe it or not, you could probably pick up a book that is only about antonyms. This might be able to help you find what you are looking for.
