Adjective List

Building your vocabulary does not have to be difficult if you have an adjective list. You can put together an adjective list that will help you learn to use more advanced vocabulary in no time.  There are lots of lists which are available online for you to use to build your vocabulary.

Adjectives Organized Alphabetically

The most common lists of adjectives feature all of the adjectives in the English language, organized by their first letter. These lists attempt to be a comprehensive list of all adjectives, and are there for the sole purpose of keeping adjectives together in one place. These lists make it easy to find adjectives that start with the same letter for the purposes of alliteration.

Adjectives Organized by Subject

If you are looking for adjectives to describe particular objects, you might want to look for a special list that deals with your needs. For example, you can find lists of adjectives that can be used to describe the looks, smells, and tastes of food.

This kind of gastronomical adjective list makes it easy to quickly find the right words to describe a delicious – or not so delicious – food experience. These lists are effective for teaching you the right words to use in a specific situation or to describe an object you are not very familiar with.

You might have an idea of what you want to say, but by perusing a list of adjectives that is specific to a particular object, you might find the perfect adjectives that meet your needs.

Adjectives for Students

Boosting the vocabulary of students is a constant struggle for teachers. Students can be lazy and tend to rely on the same old adjectives all the time – using “pretty” and “nice” when they can be employing new and exciting adjectives in their writing and speech.

Each week, a teacher can pass out a new list of adjectives that students can try to include in their work as much as possible, and they can be tested on this new vocabulary to ensure that they are learning as many new adjectives as they can.

You will want to tailor the adjectives used on this sheet according to the abilities of your students, the grade level of the students, and their relevance to the other materials that your students are learning. The adjectives students might find on this list could be interesting adjectives that appear in the literature that is incorporated on your specific lesson plans, or might be relevant to holidays that are celebrated at that time of year.

Make Your Own Adjective List

Although lots of effective lists already exist, consider building your own adjective list that features adjectives that you have looked up in the thesaurus on your own and which are specific to your own needs.

Perhaps you are working in a new job that requires you to learn new adjectives that are part of the jargon: making a list of adjectives to memorize might be your best bet to effective, timely memorization. By personalizing your lists of adjectives, you can be sure that they are the words you need to know, and that they do not include words that are not relevant to your needs.

List of Adjectives in a Foreign Language

If you are learning a new language, think about making lists of adjectives to memorize and refer to as you speak and write. Fluent speakers of languages that are not their first language are able to use adjectives very effectively so that they can accurately describe people, objects, places, and situations with ease.

By making lists of the adjectives you need to know, you can organize your learning and become more efficient in your work as you learn. You will be able to make separate lists about different categories – adjectives which describe the marketplace, the workplace, the activities you enjoy, for example. For more ideas about building a list of adjectives, consider consulting many of the existing lists online for inspiration.
