There are many forms of snorkeling slang used when referring to snorkeling equipment. Most of the snorkeling slang that you will normally hear will actually sound like regular words. For the most part snorkeling slang will just refer to the equipment used.
Snorkeling is a tried and true activity that is enjoyed by many people on a global scale. It is an exciting past time that some people travel all over the world to engage in. While many people try to interchange the term “snorkeling” with “scuba diving” the two are indeed a bit different. While the equipment may be similar, scuba diving actually requires a certain amount of training that is not required for snorkeling.
For the most part, slang terms are shortened words used to describe the equipment. So when you think about all of the equipment used by snorkelers, you will begin to understand the slang.
If you have ever been on vacation in the Caribbean then you will have more than likely saw a group of snorkelers eager to go snorkeling. When you normally see such groups, they are pretty much made up of tourist who may have taken a two hour or full day class in order to learn how to snorkel.
Nonetheless, think long and hard about the various pieces of equipment that they were wearing? Can you remember? What did you see? More than likely you saw an array of different things.
Outside of the snorkeling and diving communities, the word fins is something that is generally related to fish. However humans can and do have fins once they go snorkeling. Fins are the odd looking accoutrements that you may see snorkelers and divers wear on their feet. There are many different brands of snorkeling fins, and when you go snorkeling, it is probably a good idea for you to have a pair on. The point of wearing them is to give you a better maneuverability under the water. It has been said that wearing fins will increase swim speed as much as a solid fifty percent. So, in this case the slang term would be the word fins.
The next piece of equipment that you may see is a mask. Short for the term snorkel mask this is the goggle type of mask that covers the eyes and part of the nose. You will most likely see these masks in a range of colors and sizes. The one constant thing about the masks is that they are all relatively the same shape. Many tend to resemble simple goggles, while the more extensive masks look like a half mask. If you do an Internet search, you will see that all of the masks serve the purpose of keeping the eyes and nose of the snorkeler covered and protected.
One of the most important pieces of equipment that you will see is the actual snorkel. Basically, the snorkel enables to keep your face in the water while still being able to breathe air from the surface through the snorkel.
There are actually snorkel packages available that includes masks, fins and snorkels. This “package” simply means that you will not have to pay for each individual piece separately. This is extremely helpful if you are an avid snorkeler or if you are just someone who is interested in trying snorkeling as a hobby.
Another helpful snorkeling slang term is something called “snorkel snak.” This is basically snack food that you can feed to the fish. Many people enjoy feeding the fish when they snorkel, so when doing so they opt for snorkel snak.
