How to Spell Difficult Words

Ok, so you need help on how to spell difficult words? Do not despair, you are not the only one in this boat. There are several people out there rowing along beside you. Whether you are an adult or a child, there are just some words that are going to give you grief when trying to spell them out. Our language is quite a beautiful language but it however does come with frustrations and complexities.

Once you think you have mastered the spelling of some words that have the rule such as “I” before “E” except after “C,” there is a loophole thrown in and you realize there are other words like “neighbor” to which this does not apply. Often, words are used that make this rule of grammar look moot.

If figuring out how to spell frustrating words is what you need help with then you have come to the right place. Below are techniques to help you learn what you thought was impossible. The four techniques are used by people all over, including those who compete in national spelling bees. Therefore, it will definitely be worth a shot to give these techniques a try to help you out on how to spell difficult words.

Memorization

Memorization is the old fashioned way your parents had to learn difficult words. The concept of this is you sit down and go through the list of difficult words and spell them over and over again. You are basically trying to imprint the difficult words into your long term memory, instead of just keeping them in the short term memory file in your brain.

Another great way to help with memorization is to play hang man with your friends using the difficult words you need to learn to spell. In fact, there are a few ways you can do memorization with a twist. You can always make a word search with the difficult words and then find each word, spelling it as you find it.

Studying

Studying each day will make spelling difficult words much easier. When studying words that are difficult, repetition is the key. The more you repeat the words and spell the words the more likely you are to have imprinted these words to memory.

When studying you do not have to study alone. You and a group of friends can study together so as to make the learning fun. Create new inventive ways to study that will help you learn better.

How to Spell Difficult Words with Kinesthetic Learning

Kinesthetic learning is associating a mental concept with a series of movements. This concept is somewhat like a dance. The movement helps with retaining the words to long term memory better than just repeating the word over and over.

An example of kinesthetic learning would be to trace each letter in your hand as you spell it out loud. This concept helps your brain be more receptive of learning and retaining the information. This concept will reinforce three methods of kinesthetic learning:

  • the mouth and lip movement as you are spelling the word
  • the motion your fingers are making as the letter is traced in your hand
  • the feeling in your hand as the letter is traced

Reading

Reading anything and everything you can get your hands on will help you when you need to learn the spelling of difficult words. In things you read, you will see words that are difficult for you to spell. Therefore, reading them will help to store them away in your memory.

We all learn in different ways. Therefore, learning how to spell difficult words can be a trial and error situation. If one method does not work, it is then time to move on to another method to see if it works. You will, in the end, find the method for learning the spelling of difficult words that works best for you.
