Writing an Effective Letter to a Judge

There are a number of reasons why writing an effective letter to a judge is something that you would need to know how to do. Judges accept and request that individuals submit letters for a number of reasons. Sometimes it is for the purpose of offering a glimpse at your character. It could also be necessary to write a letter to the judge if you are up for sentencing. The letter is sometimes viewed as a final attempt to get the judge to see circumstances in your favor. When addressing the judge you should identify who you are and the purpose of the letter. Make sure you address the judge correctly. Just as if you are were in the courtroom, it is very important to exhibit respect via your written correspondence.

Likewise, the length of the letter is very important. The letter should be between one and three pages. It is important that you take the time gather your thoughts before writing. Writing too little may come off as if you simply wrote the letter half-heartedly and writing too much can be viewed as trying to influence the decision of the judge.

Also, it is very important that you make sure that quality of the letter is up to par. The letter should be very honest and forthright. It makes little sense to write a letter to a judge only to do so without considering what you will say and how it will be received. If you are asking for a reprieve, make sure not to diminish the seriousness of the any crime that you committed. These are just some ways in which you can effectively write a letter to a judge.

Formatting Your Letter

You should take the time to find out how to properly present your thoughts via a letter to the judge presiding over your case. Your letter should be written in blue or black ink or preferably typed. On the left side of the page you should include your full name, full address with city, state and zip code as if your were mailing a letter and the date. Beneath your information you will include the name of the judge presiding over your case followed by the location of the court.

You will then enter your salutation to the judge and then the contents of the letter. Within the contents of the letter you should include your case number and the case name. You should end your letter with a respectful salutation and your full name. Make sure to leave space so that you can sign you name in ink. Also make sure to proofread your letter for any spelling or grammar errors before printing the final copy. These are some very important tips to writing an effective letter to a judge.  

Presentation of the Letter

After writing your letter, it is recommended that you make multiple copies to be distributed to various persons. You will need a copy for the judge, your lawyer, the opposing party (defendant or prosecutor depending on which side you are on), your probation officer (if applicable) and extra copies for yourself. The letter should simply be a statement to the judge and should not include any supporting evidence related to your case. Ensuring that your letter is well written and presented in the proper manner is very important when addressing the judge about your court case.
