Scrabble

The popular game Scrabble was originally called Criss-Crosswords by its inventor, Alfred Butts. He sold it to James Brunot, who named it Scrabble, which is a word that means “to search frantically.” Now, Hasbro is the owner of the game.

The object of Scrabble is to make a crossword puzzle with high scoring words. The game board has bonus spaces where a word or letter can be doubled or tripled. Each player gets seven tiles on each turn to make a word with. There are 100 tiles: 98 letters and two blanks, which can substitute for any letter.  Each letter tile also has a point value. The number of tiles per letter and the number of points is determined by the frequency of the letter in the English language. Here is a list of how many tiles there are for each letter:

  • Nine tiles: A, I
  • Eight tiles: O
  • Six tiles: N, R, T
  • Four tiles: D, L, S, U
  • Three tiles: G
